How much you enjoy Men of War: Vietnam dependson your patience for constant saving and reloading. Just like in the earlierreleases in this 1C Company series of real-time squad combat games, thedifficulty has been cranked through the roof. Your small squads have to battletheir way through dozens if not hundreds of enemies in each and every mission,with even a single misstep often resulting in instant failure. That doesn'tsound like a whole lot of fun, and it isn't. The mission design is so gruelingthat you feel wrung out by the time you cross the finish line. Still, there aresome positives. Maps are intricately designed, and a cooperative option for thecampaign lets you team up with as many as three other players, which both makesthings easier and adds some replay value

At least Men of War: Vietnam is honest up front.The very first mission tosses you into the deep end without any lifepreservers. Denied even the benefit of a brief tutorial or some tips on how tohandle the first few enemy encounters, you're thrown into the midst of a battlebetween the US and a small group of Russian advisors and Vietcong soldiers. AHuey incinerates your convoy in the scripted opening seconds and then returnsto obliterate the paltry four survivors in your squad within moments. Eitheryou get your guys off the road and under cover in less time than it took you toread the start of this paragraph, or everybody dies. It's an abysmalintroduction. It's hard to imagine anyone new to the Men of War series stickingaround for very long after this greeting. Even series veterans can't help butbe taken aback by how brutally the game begins. Playing on easy helps a bit byreducing enemy numbers, but the game remains incredibly punishing.

The two-part campaign that sees the first fivemissions focusing on Russian and Vietcong troops and the second five missionsswinging over to the US is unforgiving all the way through. You go intomissions with tiny squads ranging from just four guys to around a dozen or so,and you have to fight and/or sneak your way through huge maps crawling withcountless enemy patrols and dotted with umpteen goals. The playing field is sotilted against you that you're at risk of it falling on your head at anymoment. Enemies can spot you from long distances, hear you even when you'refiring silenced rounds, and shoot you with unerring accuracy even when you'rehunkered down behind brush. The entire squad can be wiped out in mere moments,at almost any time. You need to creep forward very cautiously, experiment witha lot of trial and error, and save every time you do anything even remotelygood. Kill a bad guy? Save. Find a great cover spot? Save. And so on. At leastthe game helps out by autosaving at smart, frequent intervals.

There are a couple of saving graces. Missionmaps are extremely detailed and come with multiple options to get past everyenemy troop position. Granted, sometimes none of them are pleasant, but atleast you have many choices, ranging from open assaults to flanking maneuversto firing locations and weapon selection. Enemy artificial intelligence islacking, too, though at least the stupidity of your foes makes it easier tocomplete scenarios against the incredible odds. Foes typically respond toattacks by going back to standard patrol routes, oblivious to the corpses oftheir comrades and the burning wreckage around them, or by walking mindlesslyinto the jungle until your lads shoot them to bits. When you're beaten, you'rebeaten through sheer force of numbers or by superior enemy positions likebunkers, but never from being outsmarted.

Unfortunately, your own troops aren't verysmart, either. They often switch weapons for no apparent reason in mid-battleand ignore enemies gleefully murdering the whole squad from a few feet away.Maybe it's the cover itself, or maybe it's dumb soldiers not standing in theright spots, but your boys often seem to think they're hidden when they'reexposed enough to take a bullet to the head. Targeting isn't very accurate,unless you micromanage troops with direct control, which is hard to do in themiddle of a big scrap. You can order your squad to assault a lone VC hidingbehind a truck, for example, and watch in horror as your lads line up behindthe bumper and fill it full of holes…while your enemy pops out of cover andslaughters everyone.

Special abilities and weapons offer some chanceat survival. There is something of a role-playing flavor here with namedsquadmates who come equipped with gear and combat skills. At times, the gameresembles the Commandos series. Troops with silenced SMGs, sniper rifles, andbig M60s provide you with a shot at whittling down enemy numbers. That said,the small size of your squads makes it devastating when just one man is killed.Lose your sniper, and it's pretty much game over unless you're in the homestretch.

Jungle terrain is both an ally and an enemy. Theengine does a great job rendering the foliage of Southeast Asia, and it isn'tjust for show. It's so thick that you can ably stage hit-and-run raids whereyou blitz enemy positions and then fade back into the green. Bad guys takeadvantage of the green stuff as well, though, and it's so voluminous that youoften can't see anything. Events develop so fast that your men might beslaughtered before you can get the camera properly into position. You expect alot of jungle in a Vietnam game, of course, but it seems like you wind up witha big frond in your face every time you adjust the camera the slightest bit tobetter view a firefight.

All of the campaign missions can also be runthrough cooperatively with up to four other players. This is the best way toplay the game, as it mitigates the extreme difficulty of going solo. It alsolets you tackle objectives more efficiently via coordinated attacks. Some missionsseem to have been designed with co-op in mind. The first mission, in fact,features a section where you must detonate three US Hueys before they take off.This is hard to achieve playing solo without sacrificing at least one manduring the assault, because the choppers head to the skies almost as soon asyou open fire. But when you're playing with a buddy, you can divvy up thetargets to blow them all up before the pilots can get the rotors spinning.Unfortunately, there are some technical problems with online play. Connectionerrors frequently pop up on the server screen, making it impossible to joinmany matches. This may be because of conflicts between various versions of thegame sold by different retailers or conflicts between those who purchased theDLC pack released alongside the main game and those who did not. Either way, apatch is desperately needed. Even when you can get into games, the play is abit laggy, and synchronization issues frequently arise.

As frustrating as Men of War: Vietnam is, itstill provides some satisfying moments. Emerging hale and hearty at the end ofa mission is always cause for celebration, seeing how the odds are so slantedagainst you, and the opposing forces are made up of what seems to be the entireUS Army or Vietcong. Still, the extreme challenge is a tough sell, and it makesit so difficult to get past the first mission that you might never get to thepoint where you can get hooked.

Tennis isn't exactly one of those sports gamesthat people get terribly excited over. You don't see any yearly tennisfranchises out there, so a good tennis game is hard to find. Luckily, VirtuaTennis features an easy control scheme, great graphics, and exciting gameplaythat will probably manage to rope in a few non-tennis fans along the way.

Because Virtua Tennis is a port of an arcadegame, its main mode is nice and short. You pick one of several real-life tennisplayers, choose singles or doubles play, and move through several stages ofincreasing difficulty. There's also an exhibition mode that lets you choose acourt, put two or four players on it, and play for kicks. You can also customizethe rules, setting the number of wins required to end a match, disabling theadvantage rule, and so on. Exhibition mode also serves as the game's best modefor multiplayer games, which are a real blast. The meat of the single-playergame is in its questlike world-circuit mode. In the world circuit, you startout staring at a world map, as you do in Street Fighter Alpha 3's world-tourmode. Different spots on the map correspond to different challenges. Some aresimple singles matches, some are doubles, and some are minigames in which youtrain. The training levels, which include activities such as aiming at bowlingpins, lobbing tennis balls into cans, knocking boxes off the court, and aimingat a bull's-eye target painted on the court, are all pretty cool. Along theway, you'll be earning money, which can be spent in the tennis shop. In theshop, you can unlock extra tennis players for the game's other modes, purchasenew outfits, and contract partners so that you can play in world-circuitdoubles matches.

The control mirrors the old Nintendo Tennis gamefor the NES - you use one button for standard swings and another for lobs. Ofcourse, you have significantly more control over the ball, as you can push in adirection while hitting the ball to aim it at different parts of the court.This lets you force the opposing player to run back and forth quite a bit.While it's pretty easy to judge the ball's trajectory and get to it when you'replaying on the close side of the court, you'll have to get used to judging theball's location using only its shadow when you're playing on the far side ofthe court, which makes for a slightly tougher match. But after a few matches,you'll get used to playing on both sides of the court. In one-player games, youcan use an alternate camera angle that gives you a behind-the-back view of theaction, but this makes it even harder to properly judge the ball.

The character models have a nice look to them.The players are realistic, with little features like fingers and teeth. Ofcourse, these little touches are noticeable only during the replay mode, whichshows a close-up of the action, using an exaggerated version of the blurringeffect made popular by Metal Gear Solid. On the audio side, things like ballshitting rackets and on-court voices all sound very nice, but they're a bitmarred by a few tracks of bothersome, poppy guitar-rock.

Tennis fans should be in heaven after playingVirtua Tennis. While the game doesn't exactly have a simulation-styledapproach, it's definitely a blast to play, and the multiplayer andworld-circuit options give it replay value regardless of how many controllersyou have.

Though it has some startling moments and a few funsections, it's mostly just a mediocre version of a mediocre game.

The game popularized a new genre, which videogame players call "survival horror" and PC game players call"Alone in the Dark clones." Dino Crisis was one of the many gamesthat followed the Resident Evil formula to the letter - its main selling pointbeing that it was from the same designers. Almost a year and a half after itsrelease on the PlayStation, Dino Crisis has been released for the PC. Andthough it has some startling moments and a few fun sections, it's mostly just amediocre version of a mediocre game.

The primary difference between Dino Crisis andResident Evil is the story. Whereas Resident Evil took its setting and itsstory from Night of the Living Dead, Dino Crisis takes its setting and storyfrom Jurassic Park. You play as Regina, part of a military rescue team sent toa top secret research facility to investigate an accident. The facility, inwhich a new form of energy is being researched, is located on an island.Something has gone wrong, and the island has been overrun with dinosaurs. Infact, the plot is so much like Jurassic Park that late in the game, one of yourteammates exclaims, "It's just like that movie!" Your team isn't muchhelp, needless to say.

Other than the story, the game is identical toResident Evil. You run around the research facility while picking up items,shooting things (dinosaurs, in this case), and solving puzzles. The game isplayed from a third-person perspective, and the camera angles change to createsuspense. As in most games that borrow the concept of Alone in the Dark's cinematiccamera angles, much of the suspense in Dino Crisis comes from the fact that yousimply can't get a good look at things that are attacking you. Unfortunately,the winding, narrow corridors of the facility aggravate this issue and can makethe combat frustrating. You'll be grateful for the few scenes in the game inwhich the camera actually trails behind you.

The graphical problems of Dino Crisis are madeworse by the fact that the game does little to take advantage of the superiorPC hardware. It looks like an old PlayStation game. The characters are blocky,and the backgrounds are pixilated almost beyond recognition at times.Furthermore, the backgrounds occasionally slightly shake, and textures movelike liquid. This irritating effect is not unlike the jittery animation foundin the cartoon show Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist, and it may make you takethose epilepsy warnings seriously.

Like Resident Evil, the course of Dino Crisis isbasically a series of door puzzles interrupted by the occasional fight scene.The door puzzles in this case are uniformly easy - when you find the key toopen a new area, it will be very obvious where to go next. And where ResidentEvil would often give you some sort of exciting sequence to break up themonotony, Dino Crisis doesn't give you much to do other than run around thefacility looking for keys and codes to open new areas. The worst parts are thecrate-pushing puzzles. For some reason, Regina can push a crate only once, andonce it's pushed, it's stuck in its new locale. One crate-oriented maze in thelatter section of the game can actually become a premature end, and the weirdsave-game function (you can save only when leaving certain rooms) makes thegame's occasional dead ends all the more frustrating.

The combat isn't much better than the puzzles.The dinosaurs act exactly like the zombies from Resident Evil, only they'refaster. Shoot them a few times, and they'll fall down. But they might get backup again! This behavior makes sense in the undead, but it's less creepy with abig lizard. You'll also notice very few distinct types of dinosaurs. Yourprimary opponent is always the same dino, a sort of generic largelizard-looking thing. And while your first encounter with a Tyrannosaurus willgive you a good start, your second and third probably won't. Besides, you don'tactually need to kill these beasts - you can always just run around until anescape route opens.

Had Capcom decided to put more effort into a PCversion of Dino Crisis, the game would have been slightly better. It wouldcertainly look better, and all the standard problems with video-game-to-PCtranslations, like the absence of a save-anywhere function, would have beenabsent. But it's doubtful that Dino Crisis would have been more fun. The problemwith Dino Crisis is that even though it is an exact replica of Resident Evil,it lacks the creepy atmosphere that made Resident Evil so popular in spite ofits problems. Like Resident Evil, it has bad voice acting and frustratingcamera angles. Unlike Resident Evil, it isn't scary. If you love dinosaurs andyou love Resident Evil, you'll likely get some satisfaction from Dino Crisis.But those players outside of that limited demographic will find the game to begeneric at best.

اس دن کے بعد وہ کبھیکبھار مجھ پر مجھ پر خفگی کا اظہار کرتا رہتا تھا اور کہا کرتا تھا کہ انٹرنیٹ حصولمعلومات کا وسیع میدان ہے لیکن یہ وقت ضائع کرنے کا باعث بھی ہے۔

وقت گذرتا گیا اورمیں روز بروزنت نئے لوگوں سے چیٹ کی گرویدہ و دلدادہ ہوتی گئی۔بچوں کی تربیت و پرورشکا مسئلہ میں نے نوکرانی پر ڈال دیا۔یہ تو میں جانتی ہی تھی کہ میرا شوہر کب گھر آتاہے لہذا اس کی آمد سے پہلے پہلے میں کیمپوٹر و انٹرنیٹ سب آف کرکے رکھ دیا کرتی۔

جہاں تک میری ذاتکا تعلق ہے میں نے اپنے بناؤ سنگھار سے لاپرواہی برتنا شروع کردی تھی۔ اس انٹرنیٹ میںداخل ہونے سے پہلے میں اپنے شوہر کے گھر آنے پر بن سنور کر اچھی صورت اختیار کرلیاکرتی تھی لیکن اب میرا بناؤ سنگھار کم ہوتے ہوتے ختم ہی ہوگیا۔میں انٹرنیٹ کی اس حدتک دیوانی تھی کہ اپنے شوہر کے سوجانے پر چپکے سے چوری چھپے اٹھ کر انٹرنیٹ کمپوٹروالے کمرے میں چلی جاتی اور اس کے اٹھنے کے وقت سے پہلے پہلے چپکے سے دوبارہ بستر پرآ دبکتی تھی۔

کچھ عرصے کے بعد اسےشاہد احسا ہوگیا کہ میں انٹرنیٹ پر بلا وجہ وقت ضائع کرتی رہتی ہوں لیکن وہ مجھ پرترس کھاتا رہا کہ بیچاری اکیلی ہے،والدین اور بہن بھائیوں سے بھی دور ہے اور میں اسکے مشفقانہ جذبات سے خوب خوب ناجائز فائدہ اٹھایا،وہ اس بات پر ناراض ہوتا کہ میں بچوںکے بارے میں لاپرواہی برت رہی ہوں اور اس بات کو لے کر اس نے مجھے کئی دفعہ ڈانٹ ڈپٹبھی کی جس پر میں جھوٹ موٹ رونے لگتی اور اسے کہتی کہ آپ کو معلوم ہے کہ آپ کے بعدگھر میں کیا ہوتاہے۔میں ان کا بہت خیال رکھتی ہوں،ان کی تربیت وپرورش پر بڑا وقت صرفکرتی ہوں مگر یہ ہیں کہ سارا دن شرارتیں کرکر کے مجھے تھکا دیتے ہیں۔

مختصر یہ کہ میں ہرچیز سے لاپرواہی یہاں تک کہ شوہر سے بھی پہلے میری حالت یہ ہوتی کہ میں اس کے گھر سےباہر ہونے کی صورت میں دسیوں مرتبہ اسےفون کیا کرتی تھی اور صرف اس کی آواز سننا چاہتیتھی۔اب جب سے انٹرنیٹ نے گھر میں قدم ڈال لیا اور میری زندگی میں داخل ہوگیا اب وہمیری آواز بھی سن نہ پاتا تھا سوائے اس کے گھر میں کسی خاص چیز کی ضرورت پیش

آجائےتو اس کو کبھی کبھار فون کرنے کی نوبت آگئی۔

اب میرے شوہر کو انٹرنیٹپر بہت غصہ آنے لگا تھا۔6 ماہ اسی حالت میں ہی گزر گئے،میں نے کئئ مستعار ناموں کےساتھ لوگوں سے تعلقات پیدا کرلیے اور یہ بھی نہیں جانتی تھی کہ نام مردوں کے ہیں یاعورتوں کے کہ چیٹنگ کے تھرو جو بھی مجھ سے۔۔۔۔بات کرتا میں اسی سے گفتگوکرنا میں اسیست گفتگوکرنا شروع کردیا کرتی تھی حالانکہ میں جانتی بھی تھی کہ یہ بات کرنے والا مردہے۔

ہاں!

ایک شخص ایسا تھاجس کی طرف میں بہت مائل ہوگئی ۔مجھے اس سے بات کرنا اچھا لگتا اس کی ظریفانہ گفتگوکے لطائف و نکتے پسند آتے اس کی باتیں بڑی دلچسپ اور جی کو لبھانے والی ہوتیں۔

دن گزرتے گئے اورہم دونوں کے باہی تعلقات گہرے سے گہرے ترین ہوتے چلے گئے ان تعلقات کے قائم ہونے میں3 مہینے لگےوہ مجھے اپنی میٹھی میٹھی باتوں سے اپنی طرف کھینچتا چلا گیا اس کی گفتگوکے ہر ہر لفظ سے پیار محبت کے پیمانے چھلکتے تھے اس سے شوقِ دیدار دو آتشہ ہوتاگیا۔ہوسکتاہے کہ اس کے الفاظ تو اس حد تک خوبصورت نہ ہوں تاہم شیطان انہیں میرے سامنے خوب مزیںکرکے پیش کرتا رہا۔

آج تک ہماری ساریکی ساری گفتگو چیٹنگ کے ذریعے صرف تحریری تھی ۔ایک دن اس نے میری آواز سننے کا مطالبہکیا جسے میں نے رد کردیا۔اس نے بڑا ہی اصرار کیا حتی کہ پھر اس نے دھمکی دینا شروعاگر میں نے آواز نہ سنائی وہ تحریری گفتگو بھی بند کردے گا نہ چیٹ اور نہ ہی میل کرےگا۔

میں نے اس کے اس مطالبےکو ٹالنے اور اپنی رائے پر ڈٹے رہنے کی بہت کوشش کی مگر میں اس پر قائم نہ رہ سکی،پتہ نہیں کیوں ؟یہاں تک کہ میں نے حامی بھرلی اور ہم اس پر متفق ہوگئے کہ صرف ایک ہیمرتبہ آواز سے گفتگو ہوگی اب کے ہم نے آواز والی گفتگو کا ذریعہ اختیار کرلیا۔

اگرچہ مطلوبہ سسٹماتنا معیاری نہیں تھا تاہم اس کی آواز بہت ہی پیاری اور اس کی گفتگو انتہائی شیریںاور دل لو موہ لینے والی تھی۔اس نے بتایا کہ تمہاری آواز صاف نہیں آرہی ہے لہذا تماپنا موبائل نمبر دو میں نے اس سے انکار کردیا۔

مجھے تعجب اس کی اِسجرت پر ہوا جب کہ میں دیر تک اس سے گفتگو کرنے کی ہمت بھی نہ پاسکی۔

میں جانتی تھی کہشیطان مردود میرے سر پر سوار تھا وہ مجھے اس کی آواز سنوا میرے دین اخلاق اور عفت وعصمتکے بکھیرنا چاہتا ہے۔انہیں بھی چھیننا چاہتا تھا یہاں تک کہ وہ دن آگیا میں نے اس سےفون پر بات کی اس دن میری زندگی میں انحراف و کج روی شروع ہوگئی میں آہستہ آہستہ اسراستے پر بہت آگے نکل گئی میں اس سلسلہ میں بات کو طول نہیں دیتی ۔جو شخص میرا یہ قصہپڑھے گا وہ یہی سمجھے گا کہ میرا شوہر میرے بارے میں لاپروا تھا۔وہ گھر سے بکثرت غائبرہاکرتا تھا نہیں بلکہ اصل حقیقت اس کے برعکس ہے جب وہ اپنے کام سے کام رکھتا تھا اوروہاں سے سیدھا گھر آجاتا تھا ،وہ میری خاطر اور میرے بچوں کے خاطر اپنے دوستوں کے پاسبھی کم جایا کرتا تھا۔

میں نے اسے یہ سبقدینے اوع اس سلسلہ میں اس کی حوصلہ آفزائی کرنے لگی کہ وہ پارٹ ٹائم بھی کوئی کام کرلیاکرے تاکہ قرضوں سے ہماری جان چھوٹے اور مختلف قسطوں کی ادائیگی کے لامتائی سلسلہ سےخلاصی ملے،واقعی اس نے میری یہ بات بھی مان لی اور اپنے کسی دوست کے کسی چھوٹے سے کاروبارمیں حصہ دار بن گیا۔

اس کے بعد تو میںاپنازیادہ سے زیادہ وقت انٹرنیٹ پر ہی گذارا کرتی تھی۔کبھی کبھی وہ ٹیلیفون اور نیٹکے کنکشن کے بلوں پر سٹپٹا جاتے تھے جو بعض دفعہ ہزاروں ریال تک آجاتے تھے لیکن وہمجھے اس سے روکنے میں کامیاب نہ ہوسکے۔اس آشنا کیساتھ میرے تعلقات رو بروز گہرے ہوتےگئے۔جب کئی مرتبہ اس نے میرے آواز سن لی بلکہ خوب دل بھر

ہم دونوں باہم ملکر اپنی اپنی راہ چلے گئے مگر اس ملاقات کے بعد ہمارا تعلق روز بروز قوی سے قوی ترہوگیااور وہ نہیں جانتا تھا کہ میں شادی شدہ ہوں بال بچوں والی ہوں۔اس کے بعد بھی اس نےمجھے کئی مرتبہ دیکھا اور ملاقات کی۔آہستہ آہستہ اسے میرے بارے میں تمام باتیں معلومہوگئیں۔اس نے مجھے اس مقام پر لاکھڑاکہ میں اپنے شوہر سے نفرت کرنے لگی بالآخر اس نےمیرے سامنے یہ مشورہ رکھ دیا کہ میں اپنے شوہر سے طلاق لے لوں وہ مجھ سے شادی کرلے۔

جمعہ کا دن وہ5دنکےلیے سفر پر روانہ ہوگیا۔اس کی روانگی کے بعد ایک دن چھوڑ کر اتوار کو ہم نے ملاقاتطے کی ۔میں نے اس شیطان صفت شخص سے ایک مارکیٹ میں ملاقات کرنے کا وعدہ کیا۔میں اسکیساتھ گاڑی میں سوار ہوگئی وہ مجھے مختلف سڑکوں پر لیے گھماتا رہا۔یہ میری زندگی کاپہلا موقع تھا کہ میں کسی اجنبی کیساتھ باہر گئی تھی اس لیے میں کچھ قلق و اضطراب اورپریشانی میں مبتلا تھی۔میں نے اس سے کہا میں گھر سے زیادہ زیادہ دیر باہر نہیں رہ سکتی۔مجھےڈر ہے کہ میرا شوہر کہیں فون نہ کرے یا کوئی واقعہ نہ رونما ہوجائے۔اس نے یہ سن کرکہا کہ وہ تمہیں طلاق دے دے گا۔اس طرح تمہاری جان ہی چھوٹ جائے گی۔مجھے اس کی یہ باتاور آواز کی ٹون پسند نہ آئی میں مزید پریشان ہوگئی میں نے اس سے کہا وہ دور ہرگز نہجائے ،میں گھر سے زیادہ لیٹ نہیں ہوجاچاہتی۔

اس نے مجھے باتوںمیں الجھا شروع کردیا ناگاہ میں ایسی جگہ پر تھی جسے میں جانتی نہیں تھی۔وہ جگہ اندھیریتھی کوئی باغیچہ یا فورم ہاؤس لگتا تھا۔یہ کون سی جگہ ہے؟تم مجھے کہاں لے جارہے ہوں؟؟؟؟میںنے اس سے پوچھا۔

چندہی لمحات گذرےتھے کہ گاڑی گھڑی ہوگئی اور کوئی دوسرا ہی شخص میری سائیڈ کا دروازہ کھول کر مجھے زبردستیگاڑی سے باہر کھینچ رہا تھا تیسرا شخص بھی فارم کے اندر تھا میں نے ایک چوتھے آدمیکو بھی بیٹھے دیکھا۔اس جگہ عجیب قسم کی بوئیں اٹھ رہی تھیں۔ہر چیز مجھ پر بجلی بن کرگر رہی تھی۔میں چلائی روئی منتیں سماجتیں کرکے اس سے رحم کرنے اور ترس کھانے کی اپیلکی میں نے اپنے منہ پر زناٹے دار محسوس کیا اور کوئی آواز مجھ پر چلا رہی تھی اس آوازاور طمانچے نے نہ صرف مجھے ہلا کر رکھ دیا بلکہ میں خوف وہراس کے نتیجے میں اپنے ہوشہی کھو بیٹھی تھی۔اب میرے ساتھ جوہوا سوہوا کچھ دیر بعد جب مجھے ہوش آیا تو میں سختمرغوب تھی۔

میرے سارے جسم پررعشہ طاری تھا میں لمحہ بھر کے لیے رونے سے نہیں رک رہی تھی۔انہوں نے میری آنکھوں پرپٹی باندھی اور گاڑی میں ڈالا اور میرے گھر کے قریب ایک جگہ مجھے پھینک گئے۔میں بھاگمبھاگ گھر میں داخل ہوگئی اب میرا ایک کام تھا رونا بس روتے ہی رہنا حتی کہ میرے آنکھوںسے آنسو خشک ہوگئے میں ہر وقت اپنے کمرے میں ہی پڑی رہتی مجھے آپنے آپ سے نفرت ہوگئی۔

میں نے خودکشی کیکوشش کی،گھر میں ہوتے ہوئے بھی اپنے بچوں کے بارے میں کچھ نہیں جانتی تھی،نہ ہی مجھےان کی موجودگی کا احساس ہوتھا تھا،میرا شوہر سفر سے واپس لوٹ آیا،میری حالت اتنی بریہوچکی تھی کہ وہ مجھے زبردستی ہسپتال لے گیا ڈاکٹروں نے مجھے آرام و سکون بخش دوائیںدیں۔میں نے شوہر سے التجا کہ وہ مجھے جلد ازجلد میرے میکے لے جائے،میں بہت روتی تھیاور میرے گھر والے کچھ نہیں کرسکتے تھے۔ان کا خیال تھا کہ میرے شوہر سے کسی وجہ سےناچاقی ہوگئی ہے۔

میرے والد نے میرےشوہر سے افہام و تفہیم کی کوشش کی لیکن وہ کسی نتیجے پر نہ پہنچے کیونکہ میرے شوہرکو دراصل کسی بات کا علم نہیں تھا اور نہ کیس دوسرے کو مجھ پر بیتنے والے سانحہ کیخبرتھی۔ان گھٹیا لوگوں نے مجھے کس بڑی ذلت میں مبتلا کردیا تھا ۔

اب میں یہ کلمات انتہائینقاہت کے عالم میں فراشِ مرض پر پڑی لکھ رہی ہوں جو ہوسکتا ہے میرے لیے بسترِ مرگ بنجائے۔شائد میری یہ داستان عبرت انٹرنیٹ پر دوستیاں کرنے اور چیٹنگ کی شوقین لڑکیوںکی اصلاح کا سبب بن جائے اور میرے گناہوں کا کفارہ بن جائے اور آخرت میں میری نجاتہوجائے۔

یہ داستان سچ ہے یا جھوٹ پتہ نہیں

لیکن یہ ضرور سچ ہے کہ انٹرنیٹ میںچیٹنگ کی دنیا اس سے بھی بدتر ہے۔

25 to Life is a lifelessly generic shooter that, attimes, feels like Max Payne without the fun.

In 25 to Life, you can play as either a cop or agangster. Set in the heart of today's cities, the game lets you experience thegritty lifestyles of police task forces or, as a gangster, survive the localneighborhood thugs while fighting your way up the ranks.

Throughout the early and mid '90s, there was aboom in movies that took place in "the hood." This urban-themed movietrend really kicked off due to the success of John Singleton's Boyz n the Hood.After that, the "me too" phenomenon kicked in, and there was suddenlya glut of gangsta movies--the quality of each steadily declining the further inyou got. The same phenomenon is happening with games. While games like GrandTheft Auto: San Andreas stand out as Boyz n the Hood or Juice equivalents,we're also getting our video game equivalents of junk like Tales From the Hoodor (shudder) Phat Beach. 25 to Life is the latest in line, and thisthird-person shooter is, in a word, dumb.

25 to Life is an overly simple third-personshooter that has a story-driven single-player mode and a team-based multiplayermode. The single-player starts you out in the role of Freeze, a gangster who'strying to get out of the game and escape with his wife and son. You're asked todo "one last job," which, of course, goes spectacularly wrong andmesses everything up. You'll also play as a cop surrounded by dirty cops and asa gang leader who gets banished to Mexico only to end up taking over theorganized-crime scene there by force. The story is all over the place, andsince the playable characters are to a certain extent connected, you're neverreally sure if you're playing as a good guy or a bad guy. But the narrative isso lame that you probably won't care.

The single-player action boils down to hidingaround corners, popping out, and mowing down as many enemies as you can. You'llcome across a bunch of different weapons--including pistols, dual pistols,submachine pistols, assault rifles, and even a LAW rocket launcher or two. Incase you're silly enough to get up close, you'll also be packing a meleeweapon, such as a knife or a hammer or something. There's almost always enoughammo around to prevent you from having to turn to your melee weapons, and there'susually enough health around--at least on the default difficulty setting--toprevent the game from ever being too difficult, assuming you're careful anddon't stand out in the open. An onscreen radar displays enemy positions, whichis good for letting you know when you're safe and when you've got troublecoming around the corner.

The environments vary, giving you outdoor andindoor levels to play in. You'll run through some Los Angeles-like streets, roba bank and a casino, run through the streets of Tijuana, and break out of aprison during a riot. There's a good amount of variety, though none of theenvironments are particularly noteworthy. Most simply contain singular pathsthat take you from start to finish as you blast your way through the game's shortstory mode.

As you play through single-player, you'll beunlocking new custom items for use in the multiplayer. The team-basedmultiplayer is cops versus criminals for up to 16 players in four modes. War isyour basic team deathmatch. Raid puts the criminals on the defensive as theyprotect their stash from the cops. Robbery puts a series of loot items on themap, which criminals must steal and return to their base while the cops try toprevent them from doing so. Tag pits criminals against criminals in a graffitiwar. The taggable walls act as control points, and it's up to your team to holddown as much of the map as possible to earn points. If you like, you candisable or limit respawns to adjust the finality of death.

While the multiplayer setup's focus on teamgames makes it resemble Sony's popular SOCOM series at a glance, you won't findany of that game's tactical elements here. Death comes quickly if you exposeyourself to enemy fire for too long. Overall, it's a simple mode that doesn'tbeat out its competition on any of the three platforms.

25 to Life is available on the PC, the Xbox, andthe PlayStation 2, and the experience is roughly the same across all threeplatforms. The PC offers slightly better control, with its standardmouse-and-keyboard setup, but the Xbox and the PS2 versions control just fine.However, a bug in the PC version caused all of the music to constantly skip,forcing us to disable it. The Xbox and the PS2 versions come with a soundtrackCD, though it is conveniently missing all of the game's best music, while thePC version comes with a Freeze playing card for use with the collectible cardgame Street Warriors.

Graphically, the game isn't much to look at. Thebland environments and generic character animation stick out, and the ragdoll-like physics of falling bodies look cheap, especially when dead bodiesclip right through solid objects. The sound effects are similarlystandard--you've heard gunfire in a video game before, right? The voice actingis passable, though the script's low quality negates any of the game's bettervoice actors. The soundtrack is a quality mix of hip-hop, both old and new.It's good, which makes the PC version's music bug all the more disappointing.Containing classics from Boogie Down Productions and Public Enemy ("BlackSteel in the Hour of Chaos" plays during the prison riot scene, which is aperfect fit, even if your in-game motive doesn't match the song's), it's thehigh point of the entire package.

While 25 to Life works as intended, the third-personshooting doesn't differentiate itself in any way, making it feel like a sad MaxPayne clone--lacking that game's style and acrobatic shot-dodge maneuvers. Themultiplayer is functional, yet thoroughly unexciting. Even if you're a fan ofthe subject matter, you could certainly do better than 25 to Life.

Despite its powerful and extremely attractive 3D graphicsengine, Dark Reign 2 ultimately fails to tread much new ground.

Pandemic Studios' Dark Reign 2 is a fully 3Dreal-time strategy game that looks excellent and plays quite well. The gametakes place on a futuristic Earth torn by a war between two powerful factions,the JDA and the Sprawlers. Each is equipped with infantry, naval, aerial, andtank units that attack each other with shimmering laser beams and explosiveshells. All in all, Dark Reign 2 is a solid, balanced, and very polished game -which is why it's all the more unfortunate that its gameplay closely follows anotherwise unoriginal and limited formula for real-time strategy games: Gatherresources, amass troops, and attack your enemy.

It's true that Dark Reign 2 looks great. Each ofthe game's units, from the poised Guardian and Castigar infantry units of theJDA to the Sprawlers' double-barreled Scorpion tanks, is extremely detailed.Each military unit fires weapons, like glowing lasers that strike their targetsand explode in a burst of colored light, volleys of projectile ammunition thatleave arcing trails of white smoke in their wake, bolts of searing lightning,or other equally impressive armaments. If you've seen any static screenshots ofDark Reign 2, you've probably already seen many of the game's slick-lookingunits and spectacular explosions. You may not know that some of the firinganimations, particularly on infantry units, are stiff and awkward-looking, andthat the debris that flies up in the air from a destroyed building is usuallynothing more than poorly animated black polygonal chunks. But these arerelatively minor problems in a game with otherwise excellent graphics -problems that for the most part don't make Dark Reign 2's futuristic buildingsand various military units any less attractive.

Despite whatever else might be said about itssound or graphics, Dark Reign 2 plays quite well. The mid to late games areoften extremely strategic, and they require you to carefully select the rightunits for the right job. That's because Dark Reign 2 - like other strategygames before it - has a number of features to discourage early-game"rush" tactics with low-level units. For instance, most low-levelunits are fairly slow on their feet, and the game lets you defend your basewith powerful and inexpensive stationary turrets from the get-go - turrets thatwill make short work of a simple squad of base-level troops. What's more, bothof the game's factions may build powerful turrets that are specificallydesigned to wreak havoc on either airborne or grounded troops - though thesespecialized turrets themselves are usually vulnerable to attacks from enemiesthey aren't specifically designed to attack. In fact, most of Dark Reign 2'sunits are designed this way. Each has particular strengths - which can often beused to great effect against a specific type of enemy unit - and particularweaknesses that render them nearly useless in other situations. As such, youmust build a balanced and varied army to succeed in Dark Reign 2.

During the course of the game, however, it actually takes some decenttwists and eventually becomes quite involving. The best that can be said for itis that, unlike most stories in games, this one does a commendable job of tyingup all its loose ends before the credits roll.

Superficially, Dead to Rights unquestionablyresembles Max Payne. This is mostly because that game, like Dead to Rights, isclearly inspired by a certain breed of action movies, the most notable of whichis probably The Matrix. Like Max Payne, Dead to Rights is the tale of afugitive cop who's apparently fighting alone in his war against a sinister,corrupt organization. Even the game's respective main characters have a lot incommon. Their names sound alike, their dialogue is hammy and melodramatic, theyshrug off bullet wounds, they shoot rapidly with two pistols at once, and whenthey leap through the air, all the action around them slows down. That's a lotof similarities, but that's also where the similarities end.

Dead to Rights plays differently from MaxPayne--and from most other action games, for that matter. Most of the gameconsists of third-person action sequences in which Slate has to gun downcountless foes before reaching his next objective. Just as the plot in Dead toRights offers up a few surprises, so does the gameplay. Simple yet inventiveminigames frequently figure into the action, as Slate will have to do all kindsof things, from disarming bombs to lifting weights to picking locks. Theseminigames rely on precise timing and/or button mashing, and they make for fundiversions. Also, Slate will have to fight unarmed in a number of sequences.Fortunately, he can switch to unarmed combat in the middle of a gunfight.

There's a lot to say about the action in Dead toRights because Slate is a versatile fighter. He can carry a number of differentfirearms at once, and the game features a wide selection of real-world pistols,shotguns, submachine guns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, and more. He'lltypically salvage these from fallen foes, but he wastes no time reloading,opting instead to coolly toss aside depleted weapons. Aiming in Dead to Rightsis automatic. You just press and hold the right mouse button, and Slate willdraw a bead on the closest foe. Once that enemy goes down, you press the rightmouse button again to find your next target. You can also opt to manually aimfrom a first-person perspective. This rarely figures into play, though you'llsometimes need to do so when using sniper rifles.

We experienced a major bug in the first level ofthe game, which prevented us from playing any further. Publisher Hip Gamesquickly addressed the problem with a patch, and the rest of the time we spentwith the game was spent without incident. Or, rather, it was spent without anyadditional technical foibles, as the game itself is full of"incidents" and pure action. Though Dead to Rights looks like awatered-down port of an aging console game (in fact, its looks were never itsstrong suit), its gameplay still holds up and survives the translation intact.It's not just another cookie-cutter shooter but plays differently in a numberof key ways. So if you're looking for a unique twist on the single-player PCshooter, then Dead to Rights is worth your while.

Graphics

For a start the game graphics aren't too bad,but it is definitely not as great as it could've been. The graphics aren'trealistic, which make the game less fun to play. The game's environment lacksquality, and could've been a lot more detailed. But still I have to say thatthe environment of the courses include a number of items like: coffee tables,street lights, cars, buses, construction cones and more, which add a lot to therace atmosphere. But still, some of those items look shallow and with toolittle detail, especially the traffic cars. I have to add that I liked thecharacter design, because each of them has their own personality that reflectsthe car design. You can use three different driving view modes: hood view,bumper view and rear view. I know doesn't matter to some people, but I must saythat the game's menu design really lacks in colors, and basically look shallow.

The performance of the game in terms of graphicsis good, but it does have a few minor bugs, for example some of the environmentobjects like the street lights often blurs. I also want to mention that the carcrashing graphics are really unrealistic - for example when you crash intoobjects you can notice a couple of sparks of fire that looks very unrealistic.Secondly, I want to mention that I liked the idea of racing round on famoussites around the world like Buckingham Palace, the Big Ben and others. Butstill I only liked the idea behind the environment design and not the designitself, and that's because the lack of realistic graphics.

Sound

London racer 2 offers a general race game soundswhich includes: great thrilling race music, sounds effects like police sirens,car sounds effects like car engines, tires, brake sounds, crash sound,environment sounds like birds, traffic sound effects and more. Along with thecar radio which adds a lot to the gameplay.

The one thing I really liked in London Racer 2is the sound. When you start to drive you can listen to the radio songs andprograms that can really make you laugh. The addition of the radio really makesthe game a lot more fun to play. In general the game sound effects quality isaverage - London Racer 2 doesn't offer outstanding music/sound. But as I saidearlier it adds a lot to the atmosphere.

Gameplay

First of all I most say that the control of thecar is very unrealistic and not fun to play. The car steering is very hard andtight. The artificial intelligence of the cop cars is not good either, and evenhas a few bugs. For example I often noticed that the cop car ran intobuildings, and sometimes the cops didn't even chase me after I broke trafficrules.

London Racer 2 isn't a realistic game, inregards of physics either. Speaking of which, the sense of gravity is reallystrange at times. For example, when you accelerate and hit some object, likecars or walls, your car rises into the air like it was a feather, and if youhit a street light it brake right out of its place like a toothpick and fliesaway.

Multiplayer

As I already mentioned London Racer 2 offersjust a local one, including two game modes: the first one is a duel, where yourace against your friend in split screen mode. The second mode is "Cop VSRacer", where the cops have to destroy or catch up with the racer in orderto win, and the racer has to survive for some time in order to win. The gameoffers a simple local multiplayer that can be fun for a little while.

Having been released as a launch game for thePlayStation 2, Namco's original MotoGP was a solid racing game that accuratelyrepresented the sport of Grand Prix road racing and successfully translatedwhat is one of the most physically demanding motorsports into a visuallyrealistic game--one that was easily accessible to casual racing fans whilestill maintaining a lot of appeal for hard-core buffs. If MotoGP had onefailing, though, it was the lack of racetracks that were available--with onlyfive circuits, the game's replay value suffered. Fortunately, MotoGP 2 hastwice the number of tracks available, and it includes just enough otherenhancements to make it a worthwhile successor to MotoGP.

Like the first game, MotoGP 2 boasts bikes,racetracks, and factory teams that are licensed from Dorna's 2001 500cc GrandPrix (GP for short) league. Anyone who's familiar with the sport willundoubtedly appreciate being able to race alongside Alex Criville from TeamRespol YPF Honda or Telefonica Suzuki's Kenny Roberts Jr. on 10 of the season's16 circuits. Five of MotoGP's original tracks--Suzuka, Paul Ricard, Jerez,Donington, and Motegi--are still available in MotoGP 2, as are five brand-newcourses, which include Catalunya, Assen, Le Mans, Mugello, and Sachsenring. Theoverall mechanics of MotoGP 2 remain essentially unchanged from those of theoriginal. This means that the three primary gameplay modes of arcade,championship, and time trial are included in this sequel. As you can probablyinfer from its name, arcade is a straightforward mode that gives you the optionof riding for one of the many teams represented in the game against 20 otherriders on any of the 10 tracks. You can further custom-tailor your race bychoosing the number of laps, adjusting the difficulty of other riders, andfiddling with one of five generic performance variables for yourbike--transmission, handling, acceleration, brakes, and tires--and that's onemore than the original game offered, by the way. Another new option is theability to select wet weather, which severely impairs your vision and handicapsyour bike's traction.

The time trial mode is similar to the arcademode, and it lets you choose from the same number of prerace options, butyou'll be pitting your skills against the clock, not other riders. Of thesethree modes, though, championship is easily the one with the most appeal. Here,you can choose to race for one of three beginner teams across all 10 tracks insuccession, as you would in the real world. Before each race, you're given onepractice session to tweak your bike's performance to that particular course andone qualifying round to determine your grid standing before you actually jumpinto the race. At the end of each race, you're given a certain number of pointsdepending on where you placed. If the total number of points you earn at theend of 10 races (one season) meets your team's requirement, then you're allowedto sign a new contract with them. Or you can opt to jump to a better teamthat'll give you a faster bike if you meet its requirements. The rider with themost points after five seasons is crowned the overall champ. It would have beennice to have the option of racing the actual 2001 16-race season as it happenedin real life, but it would have been impossible to model the game's differentteam requirements with only a single season, since nobody switches teams inmidseason. As it is, MotoGP 2's championship mode in its current form, as withMotoGP's, is more than acceptable.

Likewise, the control game is no different fromMotoGP's. An option before any race lets you turn the "simulationmode" on or off. When it's off, MotoGP 2's control scheme is very simple,and for the most part, you'll be able to be competitive even if you drive yourbike like you would a car. When simulation is turned on, though, the bikesbecome temperamental and overly responsive to any control input you give them.MotoGP 2 does a good job of modeling rear-wheel spin coming out of turns andfront-wheel lockups during braking, and simply mashing the gas and brakebuttons around corners is a good way of acquainting yourself with the asphalt.The game makes full use of the Dual Shock's vibration to telegraph loss ofadhesion before a total wipeout, and the controller's analog buttons offerenough leeway that you won't have to tap on the gas or brakes while cornering.

The challenge mode from the original game hasalso made its way into MotoGP 2. Though all 10 of the game's tracks areinitially available for you to race on in any of the three modes, you canchoose from only 12 of the game's 39 total motorcycles from the outset. You canunlock the remainder of these bikes by successfully completing the 70challenges, which vary in difficulty and include everything from braking withina certain distance to beating a certain track's lap record. While some of thechallenges might seem frustrating--some of them really are--the rewards you'llearn by completing them are certainly worth the headache. That's because inaddition to gaining access to a variety of new bikes, completing the challengemode unlocks an option called legends, a mode that will undoubtedly tug at theheartstrings of GP racing fans. Legends mode is very much like the standardarcade mode in that you choose a bike, track, and set your many racing optionsbefore jumping into the actual race. But instead of competing against a fieldof 20 riders from the 2001 roster, you get to race against five of themotorsport's all-time greats: Michael Doohan and his '99 Honda, Kenny RobertsSr. and his '81 Yamaha, Kevin Schwantz and his '94 Suzuki, Freddie Spencer andhis '89 Yamaha, and ultimate champ Wayne Rainey and his '93 Yamaha. These fiveriders are more skilled than any of the game's other 20 racers, and they'llhound you around the tracks relentlessly. What's more, once this mode isunlocked, you're given the ability to race as any of these five legends in thearcade and time trial modes.

Bringing the entire game to life is a slightlyupdated version of MotoGP's graphics engine. The updates don't constitute afull face lift--it's more like a quick nip and tuck. The bike models areessentially unchanged, although the riders are composed of a lot more polygonsand animate much more realistically than the somewhat stiff motion of theoriginal game. Likewise, some trackside environmental effects--like reflectionson your rider's helmet and bike's gas tank--are more apparent than they were inMotoGP. A not-so-subtle enhancement to the original game's graphics are the newwet weather effects. In fact, the rain droplets that mar your vision in thefirst-person view rival the effect pioneered by Metal Gear Solid 2. Unfortunately,however, the bland techno beats from MotoGP have received no such enhancements,and while you have the merciful option of turning the music off, it would havebeen nice if the game included a soundtrack that featured something other thanmindless beats. Thankfully, the actual sounds in the game, including the whinyengines and the crowd noise, are well done and never get repetitive.

To a passerby, MotoGP 2 might not look verydifferent from its predecessor. Certainly, only someone who has played theoriginal game will be able to appreciate the new additions. Nonetheless, MotoGP2 features more changes and enhancements to the original game than most annualsports games from EA or Sega do, and the bottom line is that MotoGP 2 is agreat addition for racing fans who missed the original MotoGP among the sea ofmore popular launch games such as SSX and Ridge Racer V, and those who do ownthe original will certainly appreciate all the new changes that this sequelincorporates.

All told, there are eight main locations, like Manhattan'srooftops, a high-rise bank, and the New York City sewer system, making foraround 30 3D levels in all. Gameplay primarily revolves around platformjumping, a little stealth, and beating up lots and lots of bad guys. Duringyour adventures, you'll meet fellow heroes like Daredevil, Black Cat, and theHuman Torch who'll offer tips and villains like Scorpion, Rhino, and Venomwho'll beat you to a pulp if you're not quick with your webshooters.

No matter how smartly you play, be ready forsome hassles--the game uses a save point system instead of letting you savewhen you choose. Game designers seem to ignore the fact that in the real world,not all gamers have the luxury of playing for long, uninterrupted stretchesuntil they can reach a save point or the end of a level. At least you cantackle the game on four different difficulty levels, including a "kidmode" that simplifies the controls and gameplay for the younger set.

To foil villains and save the day, you'll employaround 18 moves. For simple problems, a number of simple solutions are on hand(or foot): You can jump, grab, punch, and kick your way out of the game'slesser binds. Thanks to that fateful spider bite, Spidey can perform all thesemoves with extraordinary strength and agility. These core moves can be linkedinto combos, like jumping punches or the "grab and kick," where yousneak up behind a villain, grab him, and then unceremoniously give him theboot. Of course, Spider-Man's chief claimsto fame, other than running around New York City in bright tights, are hismasterful web slinging talents. Here's where the game's combat gets interesting,thanks to Spider-Man's arsenal of clever web weapons. You can sling webs thattemporarily enmesh enemies or flick distant switches. If standard punchesaren't working for you, you can create spiked gloves out of your webbing foradded damage. You can borrow a page from Captain America's (comic) book andcreate your own web shield for defense. For pummeling villains from a distance,you can launch balls of webbing at them. If that doesn't get their attention,you can shoot a web line at them and yank them in the direction of yourchoosing. No matter what approach you use, you'll find that enemies aren'toverly bright; bad guys rely more on brute force than anything else."Mindless thugs” indeed.

As clever and entertaining as these diverseabilities often are, they don't get their full due because of the game'sawkward controls. Like many console ports, Spider-Man does little to take itsnew PC audience fully into account. You can control Spidey with the keyboard, ajoystick, or a gamepad, though your controller of choice should preferably haveat least six buttons. You'll need a spider's agility to master the keyboardapproach, though it grows a bit easier with time, and a joystick can feelclunky and unresponsive. A gamepad is your best bet since that's what theoriginal PlayStation game was designed to use. It's no secret, though, thatmany PC gamers don't own a gamepad for their computer since so few PC gamesrequire anything more than a mouse and keyboard. If you decide to use thekeyboard, you won't be able to use mouse-look, which is shame since that woulddramatically improve gameplay. As it stands, to aim accurately at distanttargets you need to activate a special targeting cursor that you can only movewith your chosen controller. Ideally, a small cursor should have been presentall the time to help orient your character and aim. No matter which controlleryou use, Spidey only turns in set increments instead of using a smooth range ofmotion, which feels unnatural and makes viewing specific areas or moving tothem harder than it should be. It can be quite the challenge to make Spider-Mando anything a spider can.

Like the controls, the camera needs more work.Overall, it does a fairly good job of following our hero, especiallyconsidering that he can run on floors, clamber up walls, and zip up to ceilingson a whim. Still, walls and objects will often block your view, sometimesmaking spotting enemies too difficult and falling off of skyscrapers too easy.Also, when you move Spidey onto a ceiling, the camera sometimes reorientsitself so that you view him from directly above instead of slightly behind,thanks to a temporarily translucent ceiling. The effect can be a bitdisorienting when Spidey repeatedly switches from floors to walls to ceilings.

Spider-Man's simply textured, blocky graphicsand muddy cutscenes are distinctly underwhelming, if not outright poor. Some ofthe settings are bland and boring too--the dark, drab sewers in particular areoverused. Still, the graphics do at least evoke the look and feel of theclassic Spider-Man comics and cartoons. The same holds true for the game'saudio. The familiar opening theme song, updated from the '60s cartoon seriesand featuring an incredibly catchy bass riff, sets the right mood from the verystart. Spider-Man cocreator Stan Lee narrates the game in his authoritativestyle. Lee always sounds like he's having fun with his creation and doesn'ttake it dreadfully seriously. When he describes Peter Parker as a"sometimes neurotic" hero, you know that the writers aren't afraid togently laugh along with you at the essential silliness of the game's story andsuperhero conventions. It's all good-natured fun, though.

It's a shame that more time and effort couldn'thave been put into making this Spider-Man port better suited to the PC and thePC gaming audience, as well as improving some problems that hurt the originalgame. The awkward controls and camera in particular often take the wind out ofthe game's sails. At its best, Spider-Man immerses you in the colorful,enjoyably implausible Marvel Comics universe, and swinging between skyscrapersand firing off webs offer up plenty of adventurous, if shallow, thrills.
